Unequal effects of disruptive events

چکیده

Disruptive events have significant consequences for the individuals and families who experience them, but these effects do not occur equally across population. While some groups are strongly affected, others few consequences. We review recent findings on inequality in of disruptive events. consider heterogeneity based socioeconomic resources, race/ethnicity, likelihood experiencing disruption, contextual factors such as normativity event particular social settings. focus micro-level affecting specific families, including divorce, job loss, home loss eviction, health shocks deaths, violence incarceration, also refer to macro-level recession natural disasters. describe patterns variation that suggest a process resource disparities cumulative disadvantage versus those reflect impact non-normative unexpected shocks. Finally, we methodological considerations when examining effect

Endocrine basis for disruptive effects of cortisol on preovulatory events.

Stress activates the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis leading to enhanced glucocorticoid secretion and concurrently inhibits gonadotropin secretion and disrupts ovarian cyclicity. Here we tested the hypothesis that stress-like concentrations of cortisol interfere with follicular phase endocrine events of the ewe by suppressing pulsatile LH secretion, which is essential for subsequent steps in...

Disruptive events in high-density cellular networks

Stochastic geometry models are used to study wireless networks, particularly cellular phone networks, but most of the research focuses on the typical user, often ignoring atypical events, which can be highly disruptive and of interest to network operators. We examine atypical events when an unexpected large proportion of users are disconnected or connected by proposing a hybrid approach based o...

Globally disruptive events show predictable timing patterns

Globally disruptive events include asteroid/comet impacts, large igneous provinces and glaciations, all of which have been considered as contributors to mass extinctions. Understanding the overall relationship between the timings of the largest extinctions and their potential proximal causes remains one of science's great unsolved mysteries. Cycles of about 60 million years in both fossil diver...

Dynamic Integration of Heterogeneous Transportation Modes under Disruptive Events

An integrated urban transportation system usually consists of multiple transport modes that have complementary characteristics of capacities, speeds, and costs, facilitating smooth passenger transfers according to planned schedules. However, such an integration is not designed to operate under disruptive events, e.g., a signal failure at a subway station or a breakdown of a bus, which have ripp...

The Long-Run Effects of Disruptive Peers

perc.tamu.edu 1 There’s a great deal of research on how classmates can affect test scores and discipline in school, but what about later in life? In PERC’s Working Paper 1605, PERC’s Rex Grey Professor of Economics Mark Hoekstra, Scott E. Carrell of UC Davis, and Elira Kuka of Southern Methodist University, look at the long-term impact of childhood peers, particularly with respect to labor mark...
